It is evident that SMART Boards are a fabulous technological tool for the classroom. They provide an interactive opportunity for learning that allows students to engage in visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning.
Jim Hollis (2008), presents on Teacher Tube a few functions of the Smart/ Interactive board. He demonstrates how the SMART Board is connected to a computer which is connected to a projector which then projects the image onto the SMART board.
So what can you do with with the SMART board? ’You can write, erase and perform mouse functions with your finger, a pen or anything with a maneuverable, firm surface. You can write in digital ink over applications, web sites and videos. You can capture your work and save your notes directly into different software applications’ (Starkman, 2006). In the lastest version you can even download the software onto a PC, which means you can create and prepare lessons at home, and students can review lessons and do work at home. There are also many basic functions which Jim Hollis explained in detail on the vodcast. These included such things as:
a) using your finger to touch the screen which works like a left mouse click.
b) pushing the 2 buttons together on the machine to orientate the window so that you can control the applications correctly.
c) using the pens in the pen tray to write in digital ink.
d) using the eraser to erase any mistakes.
The SMART notebook software enables you to write with your finger, the SMART board can then register the text and change it to computer text. You can turn it around and move it around. It is a very clever piece of tecnology.
There is a gallery section on the SMART notebook software which enables you to select images such as a cube. You can then use this image to create a lesson/ presentation . There are special features such as the ’screenshot’ where students can solve the problem either in their workbooks or on the board and then discover the answers.
The SMART board can then export these pages to a pdf or even a powerpoint. The SMART board is a very effective way of teaching and learning!
