A Smarter Chalkboard

Villano, M. (2006). Picture This! The Journal, 33(16), 16-20. Retrieved February 18, 2008, from Computer Source Database.

While chalkboards still exist, they are losing their status as the classroom centrepiece. Technology is beginning to modernise many classrooms. New technologies such as the interactive whiteboard, handheld tablets, digital projectors and video-editing are all becoming apart of many classrooms globally. Statistics show that children prefer to ‘learn in a visual world and like to have information at their fingertips. Across the board, the latest and greatest classroom display products meet these needs’ (Villano, 2006).

Electronic whiteboards are no longer new, however are still ’cutting edge technology’ (Villano, 2006).  The SMART board was introduced by ‘canad-based Smart Technologies’ (Villano, 2006) in 1991 with the technology combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer. The technology does, however, take a while for teachers to learn and to get completely comfortable with, however I do agree with Villano, that it is an invaluable tool and is highly worthwhile in the classroom.
